2018 was another crazy year here at timelapse towers and as usual, it’s time to round it up with some of my favourite shoots from the year! There’s also something special happening today…
Happy Birthday to us!
That’s right, we’re officially 9 years old today. Unbelievably, this is also the first time I’ve celebrated it. January has been a bit full-on for the previous years as I’ve either been away shooting or on holiday so never got chance to either mention it or do anything about it. It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride for sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Getting paid to essentially do what is my hobby means that I’ve not had that Monday morning dread for nine years now so as always, a big, big thank you to my clients old and new for your continued support!
The Reel
It’s always a tough choice narrowing down shots for a showreel. Last year was 50% film shoots so there’s a heap of shots I can’t even show you until it’s been released so without further ado, here’s a brief highlight of last year’s work:
What Kit Did I Use To Shoot With In 2018?
Tripods
I’ve been through a lot of tripods over the past nine years; abude they take and have been submerged in the sea, pools and lakes. They’ve even been blasted with rocket launches. As some of you may know, I became a 3 Legged Thing Pro Team member last year and yes, I get sent Tripods. The thing is, I love them! I first fell in love a few years back - it was the brand to start with but after using them for a while it became clear that they were up to the job. Now I know some of you may think that I’m saying all this because I essentially get free stuff but the thing is, if I coudn’t stand behind a product, I woudn’t be bothered about it. I favour ‘Albert’ for most shoots but there’s a whole host of models and can be found here.
Cameras
Yep - I’m still a Canon fanboy. They’ve served me well and you can argue that there’s ‘better’ kit out there but that depends what you’re doing. I had five Sonys die on me last year - in my arms. I didn’t weep though and my Canons gladly took me back and pushed through the storms. I’ve shot mainly on the 5D series but also got a phase one running at the minute and a couple of film cameras, if anybody still remembers those!
Motion Control Kit
I use gear from Dynamic Perception mainly. A mixture of kit I adapt and modify for my own needs but I also build custom rigs for bespoke shots - all controlled with the NMX.
What’s Next?
As part of our birthday, we’ve decided to post a timelapse each day on social media from the last nine years as well as intermittent 2019 shots should they be allowed by the production overlords. They’ll be everywhere - Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin - click on the relevant name to follow us! I’ll include locations, kit used and any tips and tricks.
As well as this we’ve got two big four year projects in the making and a top secret 20 year shoot - I’ll be approaching retirement age when that one finishes!
As always, thank you for taking a look and feel free to leave any questions or comments below. Big Love x
